alert right now with the news this hour that a letter addressed to president obama contained a suspicious substance. the letter was intercepted as a screening facility and initial tests show it could contain the deadly poison ricin. the fbi says it's very lard to a letter sent yesterday to senator roger wicker of mississippi. which also tested positive for ricin. a third suspicious package may have arrived at the office of alabama senator richard shelby. investigators do not currently believe there is a connection to the bombing in boston. meanwhile, law enforcement officials in massachusetts are combing through more than 2,000 tips, looking through photos like this one, shall shows a bag sitting by a mailbox before the explosion. it is unclear at this point whether or not the bag has any relevance, but appears to be near the center of the explosion. president obama will be in boston tomorrow to attend a memorial service for the victims. for the loved once of those killed and maimed in the explosion, there is only confusion and many unanswered questions. joining me today here i

killer. president obama has vowed to find and bring to justice whoever was behind the deadly terrorist attack today at the boston marathon. two bombs went off as dozens of runners were crossing the finish line. one explosion near the reviewing stand injured bystanders and knocked some runners off their feet. and second later there was another blast just down the block. at least two people have been killed, more than 120 wounded and many of them are in critical condition at this hour. rescuers pulled the injured away in wheelchairs at one point. at least one bomb that did not explode was reportedly recovered at the scene but there is conflicting information about that as this story continues to develop in the evening. tonight downtown boston is essentially locked down. police have urged people to go home and avoid large crowds just to be safe. the attack came at the end of the boston marathon, one of the oldest and most famous of the world's marathons. a grueling 26-mile race into downtown boston ending on boylston street. we have a team of correspondents covering every angle of the att

of the film. sitting through the film with an audience, i know what it felt like. ms. obama talked about when we had a screening at the white house. excruciating that scene was, and how she wanted young people , ande how far we have come to realize that we are not there yet. and i think it is more than just racial discrimination. discrimination of all kinds, religious, ethnic. i think we need to do a better job. tavis: i know given your stature, there are presidents who wanted to meet you, but i am curious as to whether or not this represent a moment for you to be in the white house with a black first family, with the big screen movie with this subject matter. >> i am so over thinking of him as a black president. i think of him as our president, wrestling with so many daunting issues and problems. i was delighted to be there. one of the things that was robinson was that mrs. was there with a number of jackie robinson scholarship recipients from across the country, young kids who were brought to washington. they saw a screening of the film that morning and were hosted by mrs. obama.

that minute. it said, "breaking" two explosions in the white house and barack obama is injured. that was a fake report as a result of a hack attack against the a.p. twitter account. but it set off this reaction in the dow jones industrial average, as you see from the chart, a huge spike down on that news. down about 143 points at the bottom. and then bouncing right back up, all of that happening within the space of about three minutes. and by sheer coincidence, the white house briefing was set to start, and by tradition, the a.p. reporter gets the first question from the white house. and she had a chance to make a little bit of news of her own, explaining what just happened here. take a listen. >> reporter: i just want to say at the top that it appears as though a.p.'s twitter account has been hacked so anything just sent out about any incident about the white house is false and we'll be putting something out shortly to clarify that. that has happened already. >> the president is fine. i was just with him. >> just a strange, strange story, larry. it's not every day that you see the w

that he is now. i think one of the lessons in the learning curve for president obama has been the importance of communication. a lot of different issues that are important to him to his presidency. you do have to have the presence. the whole purpose of these kinds of acts of terrorism is to destabilize you, make you afraid to get on the subway. to make you afraid to go into a mall. to make you afraid, no matter where you are, even if you're far from the actual incident. having sort of one person that is constantly communicating with you is very important. i mean we learned after 9/11 that when george w. bush didn't do it, rudy giuliani stepped in. so the whole country was waiting for him to come on the television for those first couple of weeks, because you didn't see the president. and i think president obama has learned the lesson that you do have to speak early, speak often, speak confidently and i'm glad he's kind of cautious, to be honest with you. i know sometimes there's a fetish in american for sort of bellicose language. it makes us feel we're going to get whoever did it
